- MK4, wheel buttons don’t work after setup should be finished (troubleshooting).
- First-time correct path → MK4 steering setup. Non-MK4 headunit → SWC dead (general).
Quick answer
Non-working wheel buttons on the MK4 are usually a learn/pairing issue, not a failed radio. Open steering-key learning in Android settings and complete the wireless kit learn sequence from your wheel instructions.
Problem
- Steering wheel buttons do not change volume or tracks on the MK4.
Symptoms
- Steering buttons do nothing: volume, track, mode, voice.
- Or one row works and the other doesn’t.
- SWC not learned after a reset or firmware change.
Cause
- Steering learn map was cleared or never completed after a reset or firmware change.
- PVS wireless SWC receiver not paired or learn sequence not finished in supplier order.
- SWC harness header at the headunit is loose or partially unlatched.
- Aftermarket vs factory steering path mismatch - you are following the wrong setup branch for your wheel.
Fix Step-by-step
- Identify your path first - factory LC70 wheel, PVS wheel kit, or other aftermarket - and follow that branch in Steering buttons with my MK4. Common mistake: running the wired factory learn sequence on a wireless kit (or skipping receiver pairing entirely).
- Open Android steering / key learning (wording varies), clear old maps if offered, then run a full learn - press each requested button once, firmly, in time with prompts. If only some keys work, repeat learn; partial maps usually mean the session didn’t finish.
- PVS wireless kits: redo receiver learn + wheel pairing exactly in the paper order - LED/blink states matter. If pairing won’t stick, key off, unplug USB clutter, power-cycle headunit and receiver, and learn again with other phones’ Bluetooth out of range.
- Key off; unplug and fully re-seat the SWC-related header(s) at the MK4 until latches click. Common mistake: pins flush but latch not seated - often one row of buttons stays dead.
- If there is still zero response, compare against a known-good source screen if your build shows live key codes; no codes after re-seat points to wiring or the wrong SWC strategy. If volume on the wheel is dead but on-screen volume works, stay on steering - not phone pairing unless calls are the only issue.

- Wiring: MK4 harness
- Phone audio only: Bluetooth no audio, phone pairing
- Other vehicles: SWC dead (general)
Still stuck? Send us these photos
- Wheel type: factory LC70 wheel, PVS wheel kit, or other brand (name it).
- Vehicle: model, series, and year.
- Photos: every steering / SWC-related header at the MK4 fully latched; if you use a PVS wireless kit, the receiver module + how it is powered (without opening live 12 V).
- State clearly: whether any button ever worked after install, and whether on-screen volume still works.
- Screenshot (if possible): Android steering / key learning screen showing a completed or failed learn.
