- General (any vehicle), steering buttons dead after wheel/radio upgrade.
- MK4 only → MK4 steering not responding. Learn basics → SWC pairing.
Quick answer
Dead steering buttons are usually fixed by turning steering-key learning back on in the headunit, running the learn procedure from scratch, and re-seating the module or clock-spring connector.
Problem
- Steering controls dead after a wheel or headunit upgrade.
Symptoms
- No response from volume/track/voice buttons on an upgraded wheel or headunit.
- Worked once - then nothing after a firmware update or battery disconnect.
- Only some buttons dead; horn still works.
Cause
- Headunit SWC input disabled in settings — this is the most common cause.
- Module not learned or the map was cleared by a battery disconnect or firmware update.
- Pinched or unplugged SWC wire somewhere between the steering column and the headunit.
Fix Step-by-step
- Go into your headunit settings and check that steering wheel controls are enabled — on Pioneer, Alpine, and Sony units it can sometimes get turned off after a factory reset. Turn it on and save.
- Run the learn sequence from scratch — clear any old map first, then re-learn with the engine running. See Setting up button mapping for step-by-step instructions.
- Check the wiring connections — make sure the SWC wire from the module is actually plugged into the headunit's SWC input, and that nothing got pinched behind the dash during install.
- If you've done all the above and it's still dead, email us with your headunit brand and model, vehicle year, and a photo of your connections.
