Troubleshooting

No Reverse Camera Showing When in Reverse

Use this article if…

Quick answer

On the MK4 the reverse trigger is pin 5 (BACK_CON) on the 16-pin main plug, and the wire is pink. If your camera is the factory Toyota one, you've got no trigger wire to connect, because reverse already arrives on Connector 3. Check you've assigned the right physical camera input as reverse in settings before you chase a wiring fault.

Problem

  • You select reverse and the camera view doesn't open on the MK4.

Symptoms

  • You select reverse, the headunit stays on radio or maps and you never see a switch to camera.
  • If you do get the camera page but the image is black or “no signal,” stop here and use Reverse camera shows black screen.

Cause

  • Reverse trigger isn't reaching your MK4 (wrong tap, PWM tail feed, trailer loom issue).
  • Factory Toyota camera: you've got no trigger wire to connect at all. Reverse arrives on Connector 3, so a missing trigger isn't what you're chasing on that setup.
  • You've got the camera assigned to the wrong input in settings.
  • The adapter harness didn't latch fully when you fitted it.

Fix Step-by-step

  1. On the MK4 the reverse trigger is pin 5 (BACK_CON) on the 16-pin main plug, and the wire is pink on all recent batches. If your wire is brown, that's an earlier build rather than a fault. With the vehicle safe and chocked, meter that pin while a helper selects reverse.
  2. Factory Toyota camera: you've got nothing to tap. Check instead that you've plugged Connector 10, the yellow RCA carrying the factory camera video, into the reverse camera input on Harness F. You never get a picture without it.
  3. Open camera settings and confirm which physical port is set as reverse, then set the format: CVBS N for a factory or analogue camera, AHD 720P25 for a PVS AHD camera. Restart the unit after you change it.
  4. Reseat every adapter (for example 28‑pin conversions), then check that no pin is bent.
  5. Feed a known‑good 12 V test to the reverse sense input only if your procedure allows it. That tells you whether the radio responds.

Notes

Harness F doesn't carry the trigger. It carries the camera video (F6), the camera 12 V supply (F7) and the video ground (F8). The reverse sense is pin 5 on the 16-pin main plug and nowhere else.

No multimeter?

  • Safe checks without a meter: chock the vehicle and set the brakes, then have a helper shift into reverse while you watch the screen and see whether it ever tries to switch. In MK4 camera settings, assign the correct physical input as reverse. Reseat the adapters (28-pin and so on) and recheck the tails against the wiring plan photos, looking for loose shells, not “almost clicked.”
  • You need a multimeter to prove the reverse trigger wire at the headunit harness actually changes state in reverse, checked against your diagram (PWM tails especially).
  • If you can't meter: use a qualified installer for a trigger verify, or email PVS a short clip with reverse selected plus a menu screenshot showing which input you've assigned. Don't probe live needles without training.

Still stuck? Send us these photos

  • Vehicle: model, series and year.
  • Short video: from a safe, chocked setup, select reverse twice while the screen stays on radio or maps, so we can see there's no camera switch.
  • Screenshot: your MK4 camera and input settings showing which physical RCA is assigned as reverse.
  • Photos: your adapter harnesses (28-pin, LC76 conversions and so on) latched at the radio, plus the reverse trigger tap point if it's easily visible without unsafely stripping tape.
  • List: whether you ever get any camera on another input on the same headunit.
