Troubleshooting

Reverse Camera Parking Guidelines Missing (MK4)

Use this article if…

Quick answer

If you get no parking lines on the MK4, your camera usually doesn't output overlays the unit can draw, or the feature is switched off in the camera settings. Turn guidelines on in the MK4 menu, then check your camera actually supports lines. Some factory Toyota overlays won't carry across to an aftermarket headunit.

Problem

  • Your reverse camera image works, but the dynamic or static parking guidelines you expect on the MK4 aren't there.

Symptoms

  • You get live video with no overlay while reversing.
  • Your factory Toyota camera lost its “predictive” lines after the move to the MK4.
  • You saw the lines on another monitor before, and they're missing only on the MK4.
  • You flip the menu toggle for guidelines and nothing changes.

Cause

  • Many aftermarket cameras only send video. Guidelines are generated only when your camera or headunit supports them and you've turned them on.
  • Factory cameras sometimes embed metadata or use a manufacturer-specific bus the aftermarket unit can't decode, so you only get a plain image.
  • The MK4 camera menu option for guidelines is disabled after a firmware reset, or if you're on the wrong input profile.
  • Wrong camera SKU: the parking lines you saw were a marketing photo on the retail box, not a feature of that sensor.

Fix Step-by-step

  1. Open Camera / reverse settings on the MK4, turn on parking lines and mirroring, then try any trajectory option. Do a full key cycle between changes.
  2. Confirm which camera model you've got fitted, then read the datasheet to see whether it does movable guidelines or a simple overlay. Budget sensors often have none.
  3. If you're replacing the camera to gain lines, shortlist cameras that advertise headunit-generated or camera-generated overlays compatible with your stack. See choosing a camera.
  4. If you're upgrading from factory Toyota camera integration, expect some OEM-only overlays not to carry across. Plan on an aftermarket camera with built-in static lines if you need them.
  5. Re-seat the video harness once the menu proves the feature exists. A half-latched adapter can leave you with a blank overlay channel, though that's rare.

Notes

Still stuck? Send us these photos

  • Vehicle: your model, series and year.
  • Screenshot: the MK4 reverse or camera menu with the parking-line, mirroring or trajectory toggles visible, showing each state you tried.
  • Short clip: reversing with live video. Hold steady so we can see the image with no overlay.
  • Camera: the model name, the box label or a link to the product listing if it's aftermarket. Tell us whether the lines worked on your factory screen before the MK4.
  • State: after a full key cycle, are the guidelines still missing on every reverse?
