- You have a generic reversing camera (any headunit) and the image is black, rolling, noisy, or wrong aspect - not an MK4-only workflow.
- MK4 with black picture once reverse opens? → MK4 reverse black screen · overview MK4 camera troubleshooting.
- Shopping / format theory first → AHD vs CVBS vs NTSC.
Quick answer
Black screen, noise, or rolling bars right after install usually mean the headunit video format does not match the camera. In camera settings, try the other standard (e.g. AHD vs CVBS) one step at a time.
Problem
- Black screen, rolling lines, or wrong picture when reversing.
Symptoms
- Black screen but reverse overlay or “camera” page appears.
- Scrolling or rolling bars; monochrome noise.
- Image upside-down or wrong aspect - was OK until a settings change.
Cause
- Format mismatch: camera outputs AHD while input expects CVBS (or vice versa).
- Cable/connector: shield open, water wicking, bent centre pin.
- Adapter between factory loom and aftermarket headunit on wrong pinout.
- Loose extension on a long coax run.
Fix Step-by-step
- On the headunit, open camera settings and try the other video standard (AHD/CVBS/NTSC) one at a time - with a full reverse cycle between changes.
- Reseat every RCA/extension; inspect for corrosion behind the number plate.
- Short test: temporarily run a known-good camera with a short lead direct to the headunit input.
- If factory integration is involved, compare to the supplier diagram - especially shared ground references.
- Still wrong? Photograph both ends of the loom before emailing support.
