Reverse Trigger Wiring That Actually Works
An aftermarket reverse camera takes its trigger from the reversing light circuit at the back of the vehicle. The camera's red tail goes to the reversing light positive, the cable runs under the chassis to the headunit, and the small red wire off the yellow RCA plug goes to the headunit's reverse trigger input. Every aftermarket headunit is wired this way. On a PVS MK4 the trigger is the wire labelled REVERSE, pin 5 (BACK_CON) on the 16-pin main plug, and the wire is pink.

Problem
- You need reverse gear to send a reliable +12 V sense to your headunit.
Symptoms
- Your reverse camera input never switches when you select reverse.
- Your multimeter shows odd or pulsing voltage on a tail-lamp reverse tap.
- It changed after trailer loom work or LED tail upgrades.
Cause
- No reverse signal exists in the dash unless your vehicle has a factory reverse camera. On an aftermarket camera, the trigger has to come from the reversing light circuit at the back of the vehicle.
- A trigger taken from a headunit output instead (on a PVS MK4, the pink wire labelled REAR-VIEW on Harness F (F7) is AUX / front camera 12 V power out, not for the reverse trigger or a reverse camera) shows the camera at first, then stops switching.
- Factory Toyota camera: you've got no trigger wire to connect at all. Reverse arrives on Connector 3, so a missing trigger isn't what you should chase on that setup.
Fix Step-by-step
- At the back, find the reversing light wire: the one that reads +12 V only with reverse selected. Connect the camera's red tail to it and the black tail to earth.
- Run the camera cable to the front, cable-tied under the chassis, in conduit, into the cab and up to the back of the headunit.
- Plug the yellow RCA into the camera input. The small red wire coming off the back of the RCA plug goes to the headunit's reverse trigger input.
- On a PVS MK4, the reverse trigger is the wire labelled REVERSE, pin 5 (BACK_CON) on the 16-pin main plug, and the wire is pink on all recent batches. If yours is brown, that's an earlier build, not a fault.
- Use the reversing light wire, not the tail (park) lamp wire, and never a headunit output.
- Assign the correct camera input in your headunit settings.
- Boot-cycle the unit, then test with the parking brake set and the wheels chocked.
