Troubleshooting

Unit Resets or Freezes

Use this article if…

Use this if your MK4 usually boots to the home screen but then freezes, needs a key cycle, or reboots while you're using it. That's often USB load, apps or a supply dip. If your MK4 never gets past a black screen or the logo on a cold start, this isn't the guide: use has power but won’t start, or won’t turn on if you're getting no sign of life at all.

Quick answer

Random reboots or freezes are often unstable supply voltage or a bad USB device. Unplug every USB accessory from your MK4, then check battery voltage under real load before you look for software causes.

Problem

  • Your MK4 freezes, reboots randomly or locks up until you key cycle.

Symptoms

  • Your screen locks up until you key cycle.
  • It reboots fully while you're driving or parked and returns to the logo.
  • It happens after you open one specific app or device.

Cause

  • If your battery or supply voltage dips for a moment on rough roads or under heavy electrical load, the SoC resets.
  • A USB device or hub you've plugged in draws too much current, or it crashes USB stack enumeration.
  • You've got a buggy third-party app or background service destabilising the system.
  • If gear blocks the cooling around your install, thermal protection throttles or shuts it down.

Fix Step-by-step

  1. Remove all USB accessories, hubs included, then run the vehicle for a day and reintroduce one at a time.
  2. Watch battery voltage while it's happening, on a rough road or under high load, using power troubleshooting.
  3. Uninstall or disable the last app you installed before the freezes started, then test on a simple home screen.
  4. Make sure gear isn't fully blocking the vents around the install.
  5. If it's tied to a specific official update file, stop and email PVS before you re-flash.

Notes

Firmware & updates (quick)

  • Check build: take an About device screenshot before any flash, then attach it to your support email if the freezes continue.
  • When it’s relevant: your MK4 keeps crashing with no USB devices and clean power. PVS may provide a fix build, so follow the USB update guide.
  • Safe rules: PVS-only images, engine charging, one update, let it finish.
  • Stop, contact PVS: the freezing started right after you flashed an unofficial copy or pulled a USB out during an update, or the boot loop is getting worse.
