MK4 firmware & software updates (PVS)

Use this article if…

  • You need PVS-approved steps for checking MK4 software version and applying USB updates safely - not the full first-time wizard alone.
  • Brand-new unit out of the box → start with First time on the MK4 before flashing anything.

Quick answer

Check build under Settings → About, only flash USB packages PVS gives you for your MK4, keep the engine running and the stick in until the unit reboots itself, then key-cycle - never flash random Android images or pull USB mid-update.

Problem

  • You want to know your MK4’s current build, whether an update is appropriate, and how to apply PVS-supplied firmware without bricking the unit.

Symptoms

  • PVS or support asked you to confirm a build number before sending a file.
  • Chronic CarPlay/Android Auto or stability issues remain after cables, pairing resets, and power checks.
  • You were emailed a specific update package for your symptom.

Cause

  • Consumer headunits don’t have a public app-store update stream - PVS-provided packages are tied to known fixes and hardware revisions.
  • Random forum images or “generic Android” zips can mismatch partition maps and cause boot loops.

Fix Step-by-step

  1. Check current build: On the MK4 open SettingsSystem (or Device) → About device / About tablet, menus vary slightly by build. Note Android version, build number, and any kernel or MCU/firmware line if shown. Screenshot for your records and for email to PVS.
  2. When an update is relevant: Use it when PVS publishes or emails a package for your issue, or when support asks you to move to a known-good release after you’ve done basic troubleshooting (pairing reset, data cable, stable power). Do not flash as the first step for every “CarPlay won’t connect” report.
  3. Safe update rules: Only copy files PVS supplies for your model. Use a small, known-good USB stick (FAT32 or exFAT per PVS instructions - see USB not recognised if the port won’t read sticks). Run the vehicle with a healthy battery (engine running is ideal). Insert USB only when the procedure says to - often from the home screen or a documented recovery path. Do not remove power or unplug USB while a progress bar or “updating” message is on screen. Complete one update fully before trying another file.
  4. After a successful update: Key cycle once, complete or re-check first-boot items if prompted, then re-test phone projection from phone pairing.

Notes

Stop and contact PVS before re-flashing if:

  • You used an unofficial or downloaded-from-the-web image.
  • The unit boot-loops, stays black after the progress bar finishes, or behaves worse than before.
  • You smell burning, see damaged pins, or interrupted a flash by pulling USB or killing power.
  • You have already tried the same file twice without guidance - send build screenshots and a short video instead.
