- Your built-in maps show wrong position, slow lock, or “searching for GPS”, not just when the app has no internet.
- If you get no data at all and maps stall, start with Internet on MK4. If CarPlay maps are wrong while your phone's GPS is fine, it's usually the phone or the app, so start with Phone pairing.
Quick answer
If your GPS is weak or wrong on the MK4, it's usually low-accuracy location mode, missing permissions for your maps app or Google Play services, a wrong automatic clock, or the vehicle blocking the sky. Turn on high-accuracy location, fix the clock, grant the permissions, then check it with a short drive in the open.
Problem
- Your on-board navigation or Android location on the MK4 isn't reliable: offset, drifting, or a very slow first fix.
Symptoms
- Your arrow lags hundreds of metres in the bush or on the highway.
- The GPS icon stays grey or flickers for many minutes with a clear view of the sky.
- Your position jumps when you come out of a shed or dense canopy.
- The time zone or your map recents look wrong after battery work.
Cause
- You've left location permission or high-accuracy mode off for navigation or Google Play services.
- With no AGNSS, cellular or Wi-Fi to help, your first lock after long storage is genuinely slower.
- Your vehicle's structure gets in the way: a steel bull bar, roof rack or canopy shields the internal antenna at certain headings.
- Automatic date and time is off. Some map stacks misbehave until you fix the clock.
- Power-saving or battery-optimiser policies throttle location when the screen dims.
Fix Step-by-step
- Open Android location settings, turn it On, then set the mode to High accuracy (GNSS, Wi-Fi and mobile if available).
- Set the date and time to automatic with the correct time zone, then key cycle after a daylight saving change or a battery removal.
- Grant location to your nav app and to Google Play services, then turn off approximate only if it's offered.
- Test it with a short drive, first with the ute tray open then with the canopy closed, so you can see if the metal cover is the variable.
- Download or update offline map regions so you still get routing when data drops.
- Turn off aggressive battery optimisation for maps and location services for one trip.
Notes
- Data path: Internet / SIM / hotspot
- When you're using phone projection, many apps use the phone’s GNSS, so fix the location permissions on the phone.
