70 Series Electric Side Mirrors: Which Lead Goes Where

Your harness has three labelled leads. RIGHT and LEFT each run through their own door and plug into that mirror with a Toyota-style plug. The harness takes its power from the back of your cigarette lighter. ILLUMINATION only lights your mirror switch, so you can leave it disconnected.

Use this article if…

  • You're fitting PVS electric side mirrors to a 70 Series LandCruiser.
  • You've got the harness out and you're not sure which lead goes where.
  • You're quoting the job and want to see what's involved.

What each lead does

  • RIGHT: runs through your right-hand door and plugs into your right mirror.
  • LEFT: runs through your left-hand door and plugs into your left mirror.
  • ILLUMINATION: the backlight for your mirror switch. It's optional.

The harness plugs into the back of your cigarette lighter for power. The supplied mirror adjuster switch fits on the right-hand side of your dash.

Before you start

This is a genuine wiring install, not plug and play. We recommend a qualified installer or auto electrician.

You'll need:

  • A drill, for the cable hole through each door
  • The tools to take your door trim off

Drilling the hole through each door is the hardest part of the job. Disconnect your battery before you start on the wiring.

Run the RIGHT and LEFT leads through each door

Do one door at a time. The steps are the same on both sides.

  1. Take your door trim off.
  2. Drill a hole through the door, behind the mirror, for the cable.
  3. Take the RIGHT lead to your right-hand door, or the LEFT lead to your left-hand door.
  4. Route the lead through the door and along the factory loom into the cab.
  5. Keep the lead inside the door boot, so it doesn't chafe or get pinched when the door closes.
  6. Plug the lead into the mirror. It's an original Toyota-style plug, so there's no splicing at the mirror end.

Connect power at the cigarette lighter

Power is plug and play. Plug the harness into the back of your cigarette lighter, on its power feed. You don't cut or tap into your factory loom for power.

Fit the mirror switch

Fit the supplied mirror adjuster switch on the right-hand side of your dash.

Connect the ILLUMINATION lead (optional)

ILLUMINATION only runs the backlight in your mirror switch. Your mirrors work with it connected or not.

  • Leave it disconnected: your switch works, it just isn't lit.
  • Light the switch with your parkers: tap ILLUMINATION into an illumination wire.

Test before you refit the trim

  1. Reconnect your battery and turn your ignition on.
  2. Move each mirror from the switch, in every direction.
  3. If you connected ILLUMINATION, switch your parkers on and check the switch lights up.
  4. Refit your door trim once both mirrors move.

Heated glass and weather shields

The mirrors come with heated or non-heated glass. That's the only difference between the two.

Factory Toyota weather shields clear the mirrors. We haven't test-fitted aftermarket shields.

If a mirror wobbles

The mirror is an OEM-style unit with adjustment screws under the pivot. Take the mirror off, snug that screw and refit it.
