Toyota's motorsport arm has confirmed it will run a hydrogen fuel cell-powered Hilux at the 2027 Dakar Rally, a significant step in the brand's push to prove alternative powertrains in the world's toughest off-road event.

Toyota's motorsport arm is taking hydrogen racing at the 2027 Dakar Rally. GAZOO Racing has confirmed it will enter the DKR GR FC Hilux, a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), as a central part of its commitment to developing motorsports-bred technology for road cars. For Hilux owners, the Dakar name carries real weight, and Toyota's results there have long fed back into the production vehicles many Australians drive every day.

The timing matters as much as the ambition. GAZOO Racing has been open about its belief that the racetrack, and in this case the Saharan and Arabian desert stages of Dakar, is the most demanding proving ground available for next-generation drivetrains. Dakar hands out heat, sand, altitude and mechanical stress in abundance. Putting an FCEV through that isn't the same proposition as controlled test conditions, and that's the point.

What an FCEV is, and why Dakar suits it

A fuel cell electric vehicle makes its own electricity on board. It combines hydrogen with oxygen, and the main byproduct is water rather than exhaust emissions.

Unlike a battery electric vehicle, an FCEV doesn't need to carry its energy in heavy cells the same way. Refuelling with hydrogen is also much faster than recharging a large battery pack. In a marathon event like Dakar, where energy management, heat dissipation and reliability over thousands of kilometres decide the result, those traits matter to the engineering challenge.

Using the Hilux body for the campaign fits how the team has always worked at Dakar: develop the technology hard in competition, take the lessons from every stage, then feed them back into the vehicles people actually drive. The DKR GR FC Hilux is a bespoke competition machine with no direct relationship to any Hilux variant on sale in Australia. Even so, what gets learned on a Dakar campaign tends to find its way into the wider Toyota story eventually.

A brand that tests what it builds

Using racing to improve road cars has been a consistent thread through GAZOO Racing's Dakar involvement. Taking an emerging powertrain technology to the sport's most extreme level is a statement of intent, not a cautious step.

Whether FCEV technology ever reaches a production Hilux in Australia goes well beyond what this announcement confirms, and Toyota has made no such claims. What it does confirm is that the engineering work needed to make a hydrogen-powered vehicle survive Dakar is now underway in earnest.
