- Your call quality, voice assistant or voice search is poor or silent, and an external mic is fitted or supplied with your kit.
- Phone link failing altogether? Go to Phone pairing. Bluetooth media silent? Go to Bluetooth no sound.
Quick answer
Most external mic trouble on your MK4 comes down to where you've mounted the mic and wind noise, a half-seated mic jack, or Android and CarPlay refusing mic permission. Reseat the plug, reposition the mic to the first-boot guidance, then retest with a voice memo parked. Re-allow the microphone for your phone projection apps.
Problem
- Your PVS external microphone or hands-free path on the MK4 is quiet, noisy or ignored during calls and voice features.
Symptoms
- Your caller only hears you through your phone mic, with the phone in your pocket.
- You hear whistling wind on highway tests.
- Your voice assistant comes back with “didn’t catch that” every time.
- Your Bluetooth call works parked but is unusable when moving, which points to placement, gain or noise.
Cause
- The mic plug isn't fully home on the dedicated 3.5 mm mini-jack header, or you've run the cable through a pinch point.
- Your Android input is still set to the internal Bluetooth phone mic while you expect the external capsule.
- You've aimed the mic at an HVAC outlet or an open window, so turbulence dominates.
- Your projection or assistant services blocked microphone permission after an OS update.
- The cable got kinked when you pulled the trim out.
Fix Step-by-step
- Follow the first-boot mic placement: clip the mic toward driver mouth height, clear of A-pillar tweeter rattle, with no tight 90° kinks.
- Unplug and re-seat the mic jack with the MK4 powered down if the harness allows, then listen for the faint click.
- Test with the Android sound recorder, parked where it's safe and legal, cycling the internal and the wired input if the menu exposes it.
- When you're on a CarPlay or Android Auto call, take your phone off the lock screen, then allow the microphone permission popups rather than denying them once and leaving them blocked.
- Reroute the cable behind the dash bracing, then zip-tie the service loop away from the steering universal and the heater hoses.
- If you're hearing wind noise, move the mic slightly inward or add a soft shield to the PVS placement notes. Never seal the capsule in foam.
