MK4 Headunit Reverse Camera Wiring and Configuration

A factory Toyota camera needs no trigger wire. An aftermarket camera takes its power and trigger from the reversing light circuit at the back. Either way, set the Reverse Camera Format to match the camera and restart the unit.

Use this article if…

  • You've fitted an MK4 and the screen stays black in reverse
  • Your 76 Series wagon has a factory reverse camera
  • You're adding an aftermarket or PVS AHD reverse camera
  • The picture is striped, split or scrambled

Work out which camera you have

Your camera type decides the wiring and the format setting.

  1. A factory Toyota camera uses the CVBS N setting.
  2. A PVS AHD camera, including the one in the MK4 box, uses an AHD setting.
  3. An aftermarket NTSC or PAL camera also uses CVBS N.

Connect a factory Toyota camera

A factory camera needs no trigger wire, so there's nothing to tap.

  1. Plug the factory camera plug into Connector 3 on the harness.
  2. Plug the yellow RCA from Connector 10 into the reverse camera input on Harness F.
  3. Set the camera format (see the settings step below) and restart the unit.

A camera already plugged into your factory headunit has the plug for the MK4, so you don't need an adaptor. A 76 Series wagon with a factory camera is plug and play.

Wire an aftermarket camera

There's no reverse signal in the dash unless the vehicle has a factory reverse camera, so you take it from the back. This is the standard method for any aftermarket headunit.

  1. At the back, connect the camera's red tail to the positive of the reversing light circuit and the black tail to earth.
  2. Find the right wire with a multimeter. It's the one that reads 12V only with reverse selected.
  3. Run the camera cable to the front, cable-tied under the chassis, in conduit, into the cab, to the back of the headunit.
  4. Plug the yellow RCA into the camera input.
  5. Connect the small red wire off the back of the RCA plug to the pink wire labelled REVERSE on the 16-pin main plug (pin 5).

In reverse, the reversing light circuit powers the red wire and the headunit switches to the camera.

Keep the reverse trigger off the other pink wire

There's more than one pink wire, and they do different jobs.

The pink wire on Harness F with the REAR-VIEW sticker (F7) is the AUX and front camera 12V power out. It isn't for a reverse camera. If you power or trigger a rear camera from it, the camera shows at first and then stops switching.

Set the camera format

A format that doesn't match the camera gives a black or scrambled picture.

  1. Open Settings, then Reverse and AUX, then Reverse Camera Format.
  2. Pick CVBS N for a factory Toyota camera or an aftermarket NTSC or PAL camera.
  3. Pick AHD 1080P25 for a recent PVS AHD camera, or AHD 720P25 for an earlier one.
  4. Restart the unit after you change it.

If the picture is black, striped or split

Work through these in order.

  1. On a factory camera, check the yellow RCA is plugged into the reverse camera input on Harness F. It's the step that gets missed most often.
  2. If the picture is striped or split on AHD 720P25, try AHD 1080P25, and the other way round.
  3. Restart the unit after each change.
