Troubleshooting

Flicker, interference, or image cuts in and out

Use this article if…

Quick answer

Rolling bars or flicker are commonly from the coax running beside high-current cables. Reroute the video cable away from alternator charge leads, winch feeds, and noisy PWM wiring.

Problem

  • Camera picture flickers, cuts out, or worsens with RPM or accessories.

Symptoms

  • Image stable with engine off; worse at idle or when RPM rises.
  • Flicker correlates with indicators, high-beam, or accessories.
  • Wiggling the harness changes symptom intensity.

Cause

  • Power noise on the same circuit as sensitive electronics.
  • Poor ground or “ground” through tailgate hinges only.
  • Unshielded runs parallel to high-current cables.
  • Failing connector with micro-arcing in damp dust.

Fix Step-by-step

  1. Reroute coax away from alternator charge leads, winch battery cables, and PWM wiring where possible.
  2. Verify camera and headunit share a quality chassis/audio ground philosophy per your diagram - star grounds beat daisy chains.
  3. Re-seat extensions; dielectric grease only where the manufacturer allows.
  4. If noise follows RPM only, treat as charging-system coupled - inspect alternator health and big-three style grounds on heavy builds.
