- iPhone Wi‑Fi won’t stay on the network you want, projection vs campsite / Starlink / router conflicts.
- Generic wireless drop → CarPlay disconnects. No data path → Internet/SIM. Fresh pairing → Phone pairing.
Quick answer
When CarPlay fails because the iPhone keeps jumping Wi-Fi networks, use wired CarPlay for projection and leave the phone on Starlink (or another router) for data - or turn off auto-join on the headunit Wi-Fi.
Problem
- iPhone Wi-Fi fights between the MK4, Starlink, and wireless CarPlay.
Symptoms
- MK4 is on Starlink (or campsite Wi‑Fi) but the iPhone keeps attaching to the car Wi‑Fi profile instead.
- CarPlay works briefly then you lose Starlink on the headunit - or maps stall.
- iPhone shows “weak security” or jumps networks when you leave camp.
Cause
- Wireless CarPlay uses a direct Wi‑Fi style link between phone and headunit; the phone may prefer that over the router you want for data.
- Some builds save the headunit as a known hotspot and auto‑join aggressively.
- Conflicting routes: phone thinks the car link is the data path.
Fix Step-by-step
- For a test, use USB CarPlay so the phone can stay on Starlink (or your camp router) for data while the cable handles projection.
- On iPhone: Settings → Wi‑Fi → tap the ⓘ on the headunit network → disable Auto‑Join; forget the network if you don’t need wireless CP that trip.
- Turn off Wi‑Fi Assist temporarily to see if the phone stops bouncing paths (Settings → Mobile).
- On the MK4, confirm Starlink/router credentials are saved and reconnect from internet / Wi‑Fi setup after changing phone behaviour.
- If you need wireless CP and Starlink at once, plan around it: many crews use USB for CarPlay and leave Wi‑Fi on the headunit for data.
Notes
- Internet setup: Wi‑Fi / SIM / hotspot on the MK4
- CarPlay drops: CarPlay disconnects
- Wireless pairing: Wireless CP/AA, phone pairing
- Note: iPhone + Wi‑Fi routing only - not camera or speaker faults.
