Find the rear speaker plug
The plug is in the driver's footwell area, so start on the right-hand side of the cabin.
- Remove the driver's side kick panel.
- Look in the right-hand corner behind it.
- Find the factory rear speaker plug taped into the loom.
Every 79 has this plug, pre-wired or not, including a 2007 to 2016 GXL.
Connect the kit harness
The kit harness goes in between at the kick panel.
- Plug the kit harness in at the kick panel plug.
The headunit's wiring already runs to that kick panel plug, and the loom to the rear doors runs on from it.
Can the rears plug into the back of the headunit?
No. The rear speakers don't connect at the back of the headunit or at an amp. Use the kick panel plug.

If you can't see the plug
A 79 never lacks rear speaker wiring, so keep looking behind the driver's side kick panel. Only the front door speakers lack wiring on trucks that weren't pre-wired. The plug colour can differ by model, so go by the position and the tape on the loom.
