Sony Headunit Steering Wheel Controls: Where to Plug In

Your PVS steering wheel connects to the Sony's REMOTE IN input with the 28-pin patch lead, then you register each button under Custom. Type your model to see exactly where REMOTE IN is.

Find Your Model

Type your Sony model to see where REMOTE IN is and which menu sets up the buttons.

The model number is on the front of the unit or on the label on top of the chassis.

How It Connects

The patch lead carries the steering wheel buttons to the Sony, which learns each one.

  1. Steering wheelThe buttons send to a transmitter behind the wheel, powered by the horn circuit.
  2. ReceiverSits behind the headunit and picks the buttons up wirelessly. It comes paired.
  3. 28-pin patch leadJoins the receiver's 28-pin plug and ends in a 3.5 mm plug.
  4. REMOTE INSony's steering input, on the back of the unit or on a lead in the cable bundle.

The PVS Part

The 28-pin patch lead. One end joins the 28-pin plug on the PVS receiver, the other is a 3.5 mm plug for the headunit's steering input. It's in every kit and module ordered with this option.

Program the Buttons

Sony calls button learning Custom. Preset is for a third-party adapter, so leave it.

  1. Open the steering menu

    On 2022 and later units it's HOME > Settings > System > Steering Wheel Settings. On earlier touchscreens, HOME > Settings > General > Steering Control.

  2. Choose Custom

    Set the Custom switch to On, or select Custom, then start registering.

  3. Register each button

    Pick a function on the screen, then press and hold the matching button on the wheel until it takes. Work through all of them.

Each card shows where REMOTE IN is on that model and the menu that sets up the buttons, checked against Sony's own manual.

XAV-AX8500

  • The EXT connector sits just to the left of this socket. The steering plug doesn't go there.

Look on the back of the unit, and in the bundle of leads that came with it, for a 3.5 mm socket labelled REMOTE IN. If you can't find one, start a support ticket with the model number and a photo of the back of the unit.
