Pioneer Headunit Steering Wheel Controls: Where to Plug In

Your PVS steering wheel connects to the Pioneer's Wired remote input with the 28-pin patch lead, then you set Steering Wheel Control to W/o Adapter. Type your model to see exactly where.

Find Your Model

Type your Pioneer model to see where the Wired remote input is and which setting to choose.

The model number is on the front of the unit or on the label on top of the chassis.

How It Connects

The patch lead carries the steering wheel buttons to the Pioneer, which learns each one.

  1. Steering wheelThe buttons send to a transmitter behind the wheel, powered by the horn circuit.
  2. ReceiverSits behind the headunit and picks the buttons up wirelessly. It comes paired.
  3. 28-pin patch leadJoins the receiver's 28-pin plug and ends in a 3.5 mm plug.
  4. Wired remote inputPioneer's steering socket, on the back of the unit or on the SWC/Back Camera cord.

The PVS Part

The 28-pin patch lead. One end joins the 28-pin plug on the PVS receiver, the other is a 3.5 mm plug for the headunit's steering input. It's in every kit and module ordered with this option.

28-Pin Patch Lead, sold as a spare ›

Program the Buttons

Pioneer has two modes. With Adapter is for a Pioneer vehicle harness. The PVS patch lead needs W/o Adapter.

  1. Park with the handbrake on

The steering setting only shows with the handbrake on.

  2. Open Steering Wheel Control

It's under Settings > System settings on most units.

  3. Choose W/o Adapter

Newer units list W/o Adapter (Japanese car). Pick that one.

  4. Program each button

Where the unit lists functions, pick each one and press and hold the matching button on the wheel until it registers.

Three-Wire Units

Some headunits have three steering wires instead of a 3.5 mm socket. Join the Key 1 and Key 2 wires on the PVS kit loom to the unit's two steering inputs, matched by the label and colour in each model card. The third wire is the ground: it doesn't need connecting, but you can join it to ground if you need to. Newer headunits use the 3.5 mm socket.

Pioneer Models

Each card shows where the Wired remote input is on that model and the setting to choose, checked against Pioneer's own manual.
