Jeep Wrangler JL-2A Goes Retro While the LandCruiser 70 Gets On With the Job

The Jeep Wrangler JL-2A references the original WWII Willys, but the LandCruiser 70 Series still sets the benchmark for Australian off-road builds.

Added 2 October 2026

Jeep has revealed the Wrangler JL-2A, a special-edition package built on the Rubicon that honours the 1945 Willys CJ-2A, the first Jeep built for civilian use. It's a compelling piece of heritage marketing, and it sharpens an argument that LandCruiser 70 Series owners have been having for years.

Jeep has pulled the cover off the Wrangler JL-2A, a new appearance and equipment package for the current JL Wrangler Rubicon that draws a direct visual line back to the 1945 Willys CJ-2A, the first Jeep built for civilian use. It's available on both two-door and four-door body styles. Jeep hasn't confirmed whether the JL-2A will reach Australia, and there's been no local pricing or timeline announced, so if you're shopping here, treat it as a watch-and-wait.

That said, the announcement is worth your attention even if you've never considered a Wrangler. It forces a question the 70 Series community argues about constantly: what does it actually mean to own a working four-wheel drive in 2026, and which platform gives you the most room to build the vehicle you need?

At a Glance

  • The Jeep Wrangler JL-2A is a new heritage-themed package for two- and four-door JL Wranglers, referencing the 1945 Willys CJ-2A.
  • No Australian availability, pricing or timeline has been announced for the JL-2A.
  • The Wrangler and the LandCruiser 70 Series are the two vehicles most often compared by buyers looking for a serious off-road platform.
  • The 70 Series carries thirty-plus years of Australian aftermarket depth that no other platform can match locally.
  • The V8 is gone from the 70 Series lineup; the 2.8-litre four-cylinder with AdBlue is the current engine for new builds.

What the JL-2A actually is

The package is primarily cosmetic and specification-based, wrapping the current JL in visual cues that recall the flat-fendered civilian CJ-2A of 1945. Two body styles are in: the two-door, which is the closer spiritual match to the original, and the four-door Unlimited. It's built on the Rubicon, with 17-inch retro wheels, 33-inch BFGoodrich KO2 all-terrain tyres and a tan and brown Nappa leather interior. In the US it's a US$4,995 package, with orders opening in October 2026.

It's smart marketing. The Wrangler's entire identity rests on that Willys lineage, and a package that makes the connection explicit is going to sell. Whether it adds capability or just character is a different question.

Where the Wrangler genuinely wins

Be straight about this: the Wrangler is a real off-road vehicle, not a soft-roader wearing aggressive tyres. Solid axles front and rear, proper low-range gearing, removable doors and roof. For buyers who want a compact, manoeuvrable rig that can hold its own on a track, the two-door Wrangler is a serious choice.

It's also quieter and more refined on-road than a 79. That matters if you're doing daily kilometres between weekends. The modern JL is a substantially more comfortable highway vehicle than the 70 Series, and anyone who tells you otherwise hasn't driven one.

What the 70 Series has that no Wrangler package changes

Thirty-plus years of Australian aftermarket depth. That's the real number, and it's not close.

You can put a 4-inch lift and 35-inch tyres on a 79 using parts sourced from a dozen Australian suppliers, with fitment guides written specifically for your build year. A GVM upgrade to carry a canopy and a full touring load is a well-documented, ADR-compliant process with multiple certified engineers across the country. Long-range tanks, dual-battery systems with proper isolators, drawers, roof racks rated for a roof tent, snorkels, locker upgrades for both axles: the supply chain for a 70 Series build is essentially solved. You can order parts on a Monday and have them by Thursday.

The Wrangler has a real aftermarket too, particularly in the United States. In Australia, the depth of local supply, the number of workshops that know the platform, and the availability of parts in regional areas is simply not comparable to what exists for the 70 Series. If your rig breaks a CV joint 200 kilometres from a sealed road, that gap matters.

Tray bodies and canopies are another dimension the Wrangler can't match in any form. The 79 single and dual cab are purpose-built for work and expedition fitout in a way the Wrangler's wagon body never will be.

The V8 question

The 4.5-litre V8 diesel is out of production in the 70 Series. If you want one, you're buying used. The current new-vehicle lineup runs the 2.8-litre 1GD four-cylinder turbo-diesel with AdBlue, and 2026 models have seen AdBlue confirmed for Australian-spec vehicles. Some owners are still processing that transition.

The Wrangler doesn't offer a diesel in Australia at all. Its only engine here is a 2.0-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder, which is worth weighing if you're calculating fuel loads for remote travel.

Heritage versus capability: pick your argument

Jeep leaning into the Willys story is clever, but the 70 Series has its own version of that argument. Toyota has been building essentially the same platform since the mid-1980s, refining it rather than replacing it, precisely because it works. The heritage isn't cosmetic. It's in the parts bin.

The JL-2A will appeal to buyers who want that visual identity and a capable vehicle that's genuinely enjoyable to drive on weekends. That's a real buyer, not a pretend one. But if you're building a touring or work rig from the ground up, the 70 Series still has the deeper foundation to start from.

The Wrangler JL-2A is not available in Australia yet, and it may not arrive in this form at all. The 70 Series is on sale now, with the full aftermarket behind it. That's not a subtle point.
