What makes a rear tail light ADR compliant

A rear lamp cluster isn't one light. It's a group of separate lamp functions packed into one housing, each with a defined purpose, a required colour and rules about where it sits and how brightly it works. Every required function has to be there, show the correct colour, and be positioned and fitted to the applicable standards.

At the rear of your 79 Series you need red stop lamps, red tail lamps, amber rear direction indicators, a white reverse lamp, rear position lighting and number plate illumination. Miss one of those, show the wrong colour, or fit a lamp that isn't approved, and the cluster isn't compliant. It can still look right and switch on fine.

Installation of these lamps is governed by ADR 13/00 (Installation of Lighting and Light-Signalling Devices). Number plate illumination White Lights your rear plate so it's legible at night. The lamp itself must not show white light to the rear.
Colour is governed, not chosen. The failure we see most on cheap aftermarket rear lights is a red rear indicator, or a tinted lens that dims a required function. Under ADR 13/00 your rear indicator must be amber and your reverse lamp must be white. Smoked or fully tinted lenses that suppress the required colour or intensity of a function will fail an inspection, no matter how good the light looks switched off.

How ADR 13/00 governs the rear of your vehicle

ADR 13/00 is the standard for installing lighting and light-signalling devices on a vehicle. Two parts of it matter when you upgrade a tail light. It specifies the set of lamps you must carry at the rear and the colour each shows, and it sets the rules for how those lamps are positioned, mounted and operated so they do their signalling job reliably for other road users.

When your 79 Series was built, its rear lighting was assessed as a system meeting ADR 13/00. Replace the tail lights and the replacement has to preserve that. Fit a cluster that drops a required function, changes a required colour or uses a lamp that isn't an approved device and your vehicle moves outside the lighting compliance it was certified with.

The wiring feeding those lamps is subject to the general construction and electrical requirements that apply to vehicle modifications. Your rear lamp upgrade should connect cleanly to the factory loom, with no splicing into unsupported circuits and no load-altering adapters that can make indicators flash at the wrong rate or trigger globe-out warnings. Why your aftermarket tail lights should be approved

Under the lamp installation rules, the lamps on your vehicle are expected to be approved devices. An approved lamp carries an approval marking, most commonly an E-mark, showing it's been tested and certified to a recognised standard for photometric output, colour and durability. The marking is moulded or printed onto the lens or housing.

Fit an unmarked or uncertified lamp and you give an inspector no evidence that it produces the correct colour and intensity, that it stays sealed against water, or that it'll keep working. Compare the two categories on the market.

Roadworthiness and insurance

Your rear lighting gets checked at inspection in every state and territory. A wrong colour, a function that doesn't work, an indicator flashing at the wrong rate, condensation sitting inside a lens: any of those can fail you. Run non-compliant tail lights and you risk more than a fine if you're pulled over. Your vehicle may not be roadworthy at the moment you most need it to be.

Insurance follows the same logic. Run a vehicle that isn't in a roadworthy and compliant condition and it can affect a claim, particularly where a lighting defect is relevant to a rear-end incident at night. You can declare approved, correctly installed tail lights easily when the lamps carry an approval marking and your factory wiring was never cut. Check these before you fit aftermarket tail lights

Work through this before you put any aftermarket rear light on your 79 Series:

  1. Check the lamp carries an approval marking, such as an E-mark, on the housing or lens.
