Audio Drops at a Toll Gantry

This is how wireless CarPlay works near toll gantries. The gantry reads e-tags by radio on 5.8 GHz, and wireless CarPlay and Android Auto link your phone to the headunit over 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Driving under it interrupts that link for a moment, so the sound pauses and comes back by itself. Plug your phone in with a USB lead and the wired connection doesn't use Wi-Fi at all.

How wireless CarPlay works near toll gantries

Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto run over Wi-Fi between your phone and the headunit, on the 5 GHz band. Toll gantries read e-tags with roadside radio transmitters on 5.8 GHz, which sits right beside that band.

As you pass under a gantry, its signal crowds the Wi-Fi link. The phone and the headunit lose each other for a moment and the music pauses or goes quiet. Once you're clear of the gantry the link comes back and so does the sound, usually within a second or a few seconds.

With CarPlay connected, the radio can pause too. The CarPlay link reconnects as you clear the gantry and can take the audio with it, the same way it does after a phone call.

Before you start

  • Your phone connected by wireless CarPlay or wireless Android Auto.
  • A USB lead that carries data, if you'd like to plug in.

Your two options

  1. Plug your phone in with a USB lead

Connect your phone to the headunit's USB lead and CarPlay or Android Auto starts wired. A wired connection doesn't use Wi-Fi, so the gantry's signal doesn't reach it.

  2. Or keep it wireless

If a short pause at each gantry doesn't bother you, stay wireless. The sound comes back by itself as you clear the gantry.

If it does not work

  • If the radio stays quiet after a gantry, go to the headunit's own home screen and open Radio.
  • No setting or update changes this. It comes from the gantry's radio signal, so plugging in is the way to avoid it.
  • If the sound cuts out when you're nowhere near a toll road, or doesn't come back by itself, use the guide for wireless CarPlay that keeps dropping.

Worth knowing

This applies to wireless CarPlay and wireless Android Auto on PVS Android headunits, including the 9 inch and 12.1 inch MK4.
