Replacing the head unit in your Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series starts with one decision, and it isn't screen size or brand. It drops into the original location, connects to the harness that's already there, and works without you splicing anything.
A universal head unit is a standard aftermarket radio built to single-DIN or double-DIN industry sizing, so it's made for no vehicle in particular. To fit one to your 70 Series you'll need a fascia kit or dash pocket to adapt the rectangular DIN cavity to the Toyota opening, a wiring harness adapter to convert the vehicle plugs to the radio's loom, and usually a separate steering-control interface module. You get a huge range of brands and price points. You also get a build rather than a swap.
Neither approach wins every time. What suits you depends on your variant, your build year, the features you want and how much fabrication you'll accept.
Fitment into the factory aperture
Your dash opening is the single biggest reason vehicle-specific units exist. If yours is an older variant it uses a small single-DIN-style radio location; later VDJ models moved to a wider centre stack. Neither one matches the clean rectangular double-DIN cavity that universal head units are built around.
A plug-and-play unit is moulded so the fascia follows your dash contour and the screen sits flush in the factory location. You've no gap to fill, no fascia kit to chase, and a finish that reads close to factory. One fitting step is worth knowing before you order. If your dash is late 2009 onwards, the factory opening keeps four small plastic tabs left over from the original radio cage, and you trim these flush with side cutters so the unit seats fully and the clips lock. Keep your steering wheel controls

A plug-and-play unit reads your factory steering wheel control signals natively, or carries the right interface in the loom, so the buttons keep working and you buy nothing extra. With a universal unit you usually source a separate control module matched to the vehicle, wire it in, then map the buttons. Your wheel buttons are a resistive analogue signal, not a data network, so the module reads that signal and passes it to the head unit. Fit the wrong module, or skip it, and you lose the buttons. Wiring on a 70 Series
Your head unit and steering wheel systems are old school analogue. No data network sits in either one, so you've nothing to decode or translate to make them work. A plug-and-play loom mates straight to the factory plugs. Go universal and you'll need a harness adapter, plus a steering wheel control module if you want the wheel buttons back.
The only CAN bus on the vehicle is the engine bus running to the instrument cluster, and it has nothing to do with your head unit or your wheel.

Screen size and dash fit
DIN sizing sets the limit on a universal head unit. A single-DIN unit is small; a double-DIN gets you roughly a 6.8 to 7 inch screen, or a larger floating display mounted in front of a single-DIN body. Floating screens buy you size, but they can sit forward of the dash, which looks aftermarket and, at the larger sizes, can intrude on your sightlines.
Vehicle-specific 70 Series units are sized to the dash instead of to DIN. That's why you can get 9 inch, 10 inch and 12.3 inch plug-and-play screens for the platform: the fascia is built around the screen, so a bigger display still sits flush and low. If you want a large integrated screen that looks like it belongs in the dash, plug-and-play is the only clean way there. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Both approaches can give you wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Check the spec rather than assuming. Many vehicle-specific 70 Series units ship with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto built in. In the universal market, some units are wired-only, some are wireless, and some get there with an add-on adapter.
Wireless mirroring matters because of distraction. On a wireless connection your phone can stay in a pocket or the console and connect on its own, so navigation, hands-free calls and audio run through the dash and through voice instead of through your hands, which keeps your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. If your current unit is wired-only, or you're keeping a factory screen, an interface adapter is the simplest route to wireless mirroring.
Reverse camera integration
Most modern head units support a reversing camera input, plug-and-play or universal, and the difference is again in the wiring. A plug-and-play unit triggers the camera view from the reverse signal cleanly, and many 70 Series kits arrive with a matched camera. On a universal install you identify the reverse-trigger wire and tap it correctly so the screen switches to the camera when you select reverse. Get that wrong and the camera either stays on permanently or never appears. A reversing camera helps your rear vision but doesn't replace the factory mirrors, and you have to keep those whatever unit you fit.
Time and cost to fit
Here's where the practical difference shows. Fit a plug-and-play unit and your install comes down to a connect-and-mount job. A universal unit is cheaper as a bare head unit, then you add the fascia kit, harness adapter, steering-control interface and any CAN box, plus the labour to make it all talk, and the gap narrows or reverses. When a universal unit still makes sense
- You want a specific brand or feature set that no vehicle-specific unit offers, such as a particular amplifier integration, DSP, or a brand you already trust.
- You have an early or unusual variant where vehicle-specific options are limited and a fascia-kit approach is the only path.
- You are doing a wider audio build with separate amplifiers and processing, where the head unit is just a source and you value its pre-out flexibility over a factory-look fit.
- Budget is the hard constraint and you already have, or can fit, the adapters yourself, keeping the bare unit cost as the main outlay.
Plug-and-play is the right answer for most 70 Series owners, and those four cases are the exceptions where a universal double-DIN is the better pick.
